The original application for erection of illuminated signage and menu board at Jean Pierre's Bistro in Ramsey town centre Conservation Area was refused. The appellant argued the signage was of good quality, understated, matching surrounding precedents, and necessary for business visibility. The Council objected to the entrance door signs as strident, plastic, glossy, and conflicting with Environment Policy 37. The inspector found the signage recessive, in keeping with area character including existing signs, and in broad compliance with policies, allowing the appeal. Express consent granted with standard advertisement conditions and note that menu board illumination is not permitted.
Precedent Value
This appeal demonstrates that existing signage, even if sub-optimal, forms part of Conservation Area character, allowing similar compliant signs; future applicants should document area precedents and emphasise recessiveness/scale relative to surroundings.
