Dear Sir/Madam, I would like to make the following comments in relation to application 19/00475/C (Perk Cottage): At the existing entrance to the site there are 3 trees which are at risk of damage from this proposed change of use. If this application was approved it is likely that the existing access (currently grass) would be improved in some way (e.g. compacted type 1 stone). This would require excavation and compaction within the rooting areas of these trees. Even if the access wasn't improved, there is still likely to be increased compaction due to more frequent use of the field entrance by vehicular traffic.
Using a cellular confinement system it would be possible to protect the roots of these trees, but given the cost and complexity of this solution in relation to the proposed use I believe it would be more reasonable (and beneficial) to focus on mitigation planting instead.
The attached photo shows that to the north of this gateway there is gap in the roadside planting that could be filled in, screening the activity on the site and improving the tree cover in this area.
As the details of the proposed planting would be critical to assessing its acceptability, if this is the preferred option information about the proposed planting should be made available prior to the outcome of the application being determined. If mitigation planting is not possible, my recommendation is that the applicant must show how the existing trees will be protected for this to be considered acceptable.
