The officer determined that the proposed signage would not have any adverse impact on the special character of the Conservation Area or the Registered Building, as it is modest in size (450mm x 450mm)…
General Policy 6
Requires advertisements in towns/villages to be high standard design/materials relating well to the building/site, in keeping with surroundings, and not causing highway hazards. The officer found the modest sign's design, grey aluminium material, and positioning met these tests without detracting from the area or creating hazards.
Environment Policy 32
Prohibits extensions/alterations detrimentally affecting a Registered Building's special character. Assessed as acceptable due to small scale, reversible nature, and condition controlling fixings to avoid wall damage.
Environment Policy 35
Permits development in Conservation Areas only if preserving/enhancing character. The sign was found to preserve character through modest size and complementary colouring.
Environment Policy 37
Permits advertisements in Conservation Areas if preserving/enhancing area, appropriate style, traditional materials, no glossy/reflective or illuminated signs. Non-illuminated, non-reflective aluminium sign deemed appropriate to area character.
Time limit
The works hereby granted registered building consent shall be begun before the expiration of four years from the date of this consent. Reason: To comply with paragraph 2(2)(a) of schedule 3 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1999 and to avoid the accumulation of unimplemented registered building consents.
Fixing details approval
Prior to the installation of the sign details of how it will be fixed to the wall must be approved by the Department. It would be preferable to insert any fixings into the mortar rather than the stonework. Reason: to avoid damage to the wall which is part of the curtilage of the Registered Building.
Do not object but comment that any damage to the polyester finish may result in the aluminium being affected by the salt air.

The Isle of Man Victorian Society has no objection to the application for signage on a registered building but notes potential durability issues with aluminium signs in salt air.
Key concern: aluminium signs affected by salt air if chink in polyester finish
Isle of Man Victorian Society
No ObjectionWe have viewed the application and have no objection.; We have however had experience of aluminium signs and any subsequent chink in the polyester finish will result in the aluminium being affected by the salt air.
