Dear Sir,

Planning Application (Port Erin) 1700445D Shoprite Port Erin, Installation of Illuminated Signs

This representation refers to the proposed "totem standalone 2800mm long x 2500mm high sign at the Bay View Road entrance for the Shoprite branch."

The scale illustration below shows the size of proposed sign compared to a typical lorry carrying a standard ISO container...

A "services" sign of this size would be appropriate on a 70 mph motorway, but NOT on a residential road, such as Bay View Road, where traffic is limited to a maximum of 30 mph.

I suggest that the dimensions of the sign plate should be restricted to no more than 1500mm wide by 1000 mm high. This would be adequate to signify the presence of Shoprite, without creating an eyesore along this predominantly residential road. In addition, the smaller size of sign would be subjected to significantly less wind load, which the slender 140 mm aluminium support posts are required to withstand.
