We have viewed this application to replace windows and doors in this property.
Bridge Street lies within the Peel Conservation Area.
We note the applicant has opted to use sliding sash replacement windows for which we extend our congratulations.
The present property has a mixture of sliding sash windows (upper and lower sash with central glazing bar and without glazing bar).
It also has casement windows with stained glass upper panels. These coupled with cement margins around the windows was a particular feature to be found in Peel in the late 1920' and early 1930s.
The proposed windows are very uniform and take away the character of the property and its architectural history. We strongly recommend that the casement windows be replaced by casement windows of the same design and the stained glass panels incorporated into the double glazing.
With regard to the doors, we have no objection to the proposed side door. With regard to the door facing Bridge Street, we had difficulty in making out the appearance of the door due to the dark scan on line. We therefore called into the Planning Office to see the original. This too was dark but appears to have been a four panel door that has had the two upper panels combined into one glazed panel.
The proposal is to install a 'ye olde cottage door' with peephole glazed window in the upper part. This is far from traditional for Peel or the Isle of Man and should not be used.
Given the evidence of the present door it should be a four panel door with either all four panels solid or the top two plain glazed (not decorative leaded lights) if the applicant requires light in the hallway.
