Proposed Wind Turbine for Alternative Energy Generation for Agricultural Dwelling & Sheds, Field No. 224221, off Bollyn road, Ballaugh
The proposed turbine is a Proven WT6000 rated at 6kw electrical output and is designed for domestic usage. It is mounted on a 9m self supporting tower. Being self supported means no guy ropes are required. The rotor is 5.5m diameter. The tower/turbine assembly tilts down for ease of installation/ maintenance. The whole assembly is supported on a reinforced concrete base.
From a visibility point of view the tower is galvanized steel grey. The turbine body and blades are matt black. These colours mean the turbine assembly blends into the background when viewed against a hill/ landscape at moderate distance. The proposed field position is some ¼ mile off the seaward side of the Bollyn Road to the rear of the existing agricultural buildings. It position has been chosen to minimize impact while maximizing wind collection effect from the sea.
The turbine regulates at a maximum speed of 300rpm(revolutions per minute) which is quite slow. It does not have a gear box assembly. These 2 design parameters mean the noise produced by the turbine is low. Noise measurements produced by the manufacturer indicates the turbine does not produced noise levels above the ambient wind noise.
Manufacturer measured noise level statistics are as follows;
For a 50mph wind speed:
Background noise produced mainly by the wind blowing through small trees at 5m away from the point of measure - 60db Turbine noise at a point of measure 2m away - 60db For a wind speed of 12mph (gentle breeze)
Under the same measurement conditions as for 50mph readings the recorded reading was 45db and was not distinguishable between wind noise and turbine noise. Only a gentle swishing noise is heard when at the base of the turbine. (As reference a passing car traveling at 40mph with sound reading at 15m generates 70-80db.)
The energy policy of the Council of Ministers supports power generation from sustainable means in order to reduce the Islands dependence on fossil fuels. This proposal would contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and would save in itself an estimated 6210kg of CO2 emissions per annum. The conservative turbine output is estimated as 15000kWhs.
NOTES: Surfaces and Finishes Tower: Matt galvanised steel grey. Turbine Blades: Matt black polypropylene. Turbine Covers: Matt black polypropylene.
General: Turbine rotates to the wind direction. Rotor is on the downwind side of the mast. Nominal running speed is 100 to 300 rpm. Low noise due to low rpm, shaped blades. low rpm generator not needing a gearbox. Tower hinges down for Turbine maintenance.
