Site / Proposal

The application proposes the erection of ramps and steps to provide disabled access to Onchan School, School Road. The property is a large detached property within an area zoned under the Onchan Local Plan Order 2000 as an area of buildings for civic, cultural or other special use in this case a primary school.

The school has recently benefited from a recent Planning Approval for the Formation of a raised and enclosed timber decked area to provide external play space for special needs pupils (05/01678/B)

The proposal includes the erection and replacement of a total of 6 ramps and steps of various sizes around all of the existing entrances and exists around the school building which have not already benefited from the erection of ramps and steps. The ramps and steps will be formed in concrete and block work with a cement render finish to expose face. The handrails, uprights and cross-rails will be 50mm galvanised steel.

Consultations

The Onchan District Commissioners have considered the application and have recommended an approval.

The Disability Access Office have submitted a comment stating that, measurements and any other information for ramps and steps can be obtained from the Disabilities Access Office.

We have received no privately written representations objecting to the application.

Assessment / Recommendation

The proposal will complete accessibility for the entrances and exits for the whole school complex, which should be encouraged. The proposals would seem to be appropriate in these locations and therefore my recommendation for an approval.
