The application proposes the removal of the existing metal framed window lantern and replace with a PVC window Lantern at Ravenscourt Peel Road which is a detached property and a Registered Building (191).
As a Registered Building it is important that the proposal does not have an adverse visual impact to the property. The proposal will not have an adverse affect on the property as the lantern window will be set below the existing parapet wall and therefore will not be seen from the street scene.
The Douglas Corporation have considered the application and have no objections to it. We have received no private representations for this application.
The application would seem appropriate in this location as the lantern window doses not have a detrimental impact on the appearance of the area or that of the property and therefore my recommendation is for an approval.
Conservation Officer's report Ravenscourt, Peel Road is Registered (RB191).
This is an extremely interesting property that in the 1920's 'modern movement' or 'art beoo' style, one of a handful of its type left on the Island.
The proposal is to replace an existing street single glazed skylight with uPVC. The works will also include the removal of a flat roof section installed prior to Registration to provide weather protection to the skylight. Whilst it is difficult to see the skylight, this does form an intrinsic part of the registered building which is the central feature around which the house is planned. The current steel roof light is a fine, light weight affair and its replacement in PVC would be heavier in frame thickness thereby lacking the delicate balance of the original.
The application lacks any evidence regarding the condition of the original and the steps taken to help resolve its supposed faults. By way of interest, Crittall the Company who originally supplied the windows is still in business and indeed now provides a double glazed unit if necessary.
Furthermore, no accurate representation of the proposed roof light, in context is provided with the application. We are left to guess as to its height and to some extent, the proposed detail.
