Planning Report and Recommendations General Report Site Visited ☐ YES ☑ NO 10-17 Bronkbourne village to part of the Registered Group which in recent years have been the subject of major alteration and refurbishment. Part of that recent work resulted in re-rendering, a practice which has proved problematic. The proposal to the removal of the sand/ lime render top coat / finishing coat and its replacement with a sand / cement render. I do not agree with McGarrige & Jackson's conclusion that the use of the sand / lime was "inappropriate". I have little doubt that the failure of the render relates to poor specification and/or poor practice during its application. I would not normally advocate the use of sand / cement on such buildings. There is general concern that the removal of the thick sand cement would result in substantial loss of the masonry beneath. In an ideal world, all of the sand cement would be removed and the masonry re- pointed in an appropriate sand / lime mix and then re-rendered in sand / lime to be finished with several layers of lime wash.
