Officer's Report
The application is for the location of a storage unit within the grounds of Ramsey Grammar School in Ramsey. The position of the storage unit is shown on drawing no. RGS/02 and its dimensions on drawing no. RGS/01. No objections have been received to the proposed development.
On receipt of the application I requested that the applicant explained why the storage unit was required, what it was to be used for and how long it was expected to be required. In answer to these questions the applicant advised that the unit is required due to an increase in pupil numbers and consequential shortage of storage space and to be used to store school related furniture. In terms of length of use the applicant advised that it was difficult to answer and that at present there are no plans to create additional storage provision within the school, design work on the next capital scheme at the school is not due to start until 2009-2010.
Whilst it would be preferable to have an extension for storage purposes built onto the school the financial implications explained by the applicant are understood. I consider that the storage unit is modest in scale in relation to the adjacent school and in its proposed position would not be readily
visible to traffic moving along the Lezayre Road. I do not consider that the unit has any detrimental impact on the neighbouring residential properties.
Whilst the unit proposed is understood to be new I consider that it is appropriate to limit the approval to five years so that the condition and appearance of the storage unit can be suitably controlled. A condition regarding the colour of the unit should also be imposed.
