We propose to apply for an amendment to the capacity of the temporary campsite at Peel Football Club. We obtained planning approval earlier in 2015 for a temporary campsite for the two week period of TT 2015, and two further years thereafter, which operated successfully. We were allotted a capacity of 100 tents by the planning committee which we were happy to trial for the first year, but noted in our application that we might apply for a greater capacity in future years.
We reached capacity of 100 tents on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the middle of the fortnight and found that we had considerable capacity remaining both in respect of available pitch space and for parking of motorcycles. Reaching capacity demonstrated the demand for the site, as we were by far the latest camp site to make pitches available for TT 2015.
As requested by the Highways Department when our permission was granted earlier this year, we carried out a survey of vehicles on site. At peak over the middle weekend, we had around 70 motorbikes and 7 car/vans on site. We have space for around 200 motorbikes and 15-20 car/vans (depending where we position our food van).
We have added a requirement for any person booking a pitch for 2016 to notify us if they need space for a car or van, so we can turn down bookings once we reach the number of these vehicles that we can accommodate. We would note our continued experience that camping visitors for TT tend to travel by motorcycle or on foot (by public transport).
We also consulted with our campers last year who gave resounding feedback that there was no pressure on the facilities – i.e. showers, toilets, sinks.
To recap, and update where appropriate, the main points of our original planning application:
We have two local travel agents who are taking bookings for the site. We also have a website where we are taking direct bookings. The camping may be pre-erected tents, own tents, or a mix thereof.
The local travel agent has advised that there is significant demand for camping sites from TT visitors. We are also aware that the only other camp site in Peel is always full for TT, therefore there is certainly demand in Peel for an additional camp site.
Peel Football Club is situated on the main Peel to Douglas road, with bus-stops for travel in and out of town immediately outside the ground. The site is within easy walking distance of all of Peel’s amenities including supermarket, general stores, shopping street, swimming pool, public houses, cafes, harbour and beach.
The camping area involves the whole of the football pitch and surrounding grassed area, except an area marked off at the road end to be used for motorbike parking, and an area marked at the golf
course end due to proximity to the golf course (as courtesy for our neighbour's golfers). We expect most campers to arrive by motorbike or bus.
The football club has two good sized changing rooms, one of which is allocated as ladies and one as mens. Each changing room has a toilet and a shower area with 6 showers (therefore 12 showers in total). There is also a disabled toilet within the ground floor of the football club. These are open 24 hours. Toilets within the Tommy Clucas Community Sports Hall are also available, which include a disabled toilet/ladies toilet, and mens toilet which includes urinal. The club also has mens and ladies toilets in the first floor club room, which are available when the room is open, which is generally 9am to 12 midnight.
The site does not offer cooking facilities to campers. As an alternative, an outside catering van has been arranged to be on-site to provide catering.
The club room has a bar which is open each evening. The room also has two TV's with satellite TV and freeview – campers are able to watch TT highlights and other programmes on these TV's.
There is existing safety lighting at the Club that throws light onto the pitch and car park area – no additional lighting is proposed to be added. The lighting illuminates automatically based on darkness and movement.
