14IU123S/8 Thank you for Ihe letter from M,mx National Hcritagt: regarding the above. I have discusst.:d this with David Craine and wish to get your obst.::rvations also. Th!,;application seeks to improve the vcrgl:' area by tidying it up and making an easier area to maintain as sightlincs for thl; cntrancc to the quarry that are rcquin:d. We enclosed a photograph with the application showing that the vcrgc as it stands is it difficult area that has rough grass/gorse and weeds growing thcrc naturally whcn trimmed look.s link hetter (sec photo sent with application). Mr. Craine infonns us that it is rcquired that the verge is left uncut until November each year and the verge growth therefore gets high and can restrict views for vehieks at the entrance to the quarry. In order to improve looks and maintenance the proposal was to create areas of quarry stone chipping.'" in beds that would he tidy ami sympathetic heing of the local material, a••well we now ask you to consider the edging of the verge with a mndom stone kerb this being to tidy it up and as a measure to prevent vehicles from going onto the verge which only makes it less presentable. It would appear from thl; Manx National Ikritage letter that they consider the effect of the area of stone is "harsh". In order to oVl;reoml; this would it bc acceptable to your department if the stone areas were mixed with an.:a<;of heather planting and other low lying indigenous plants, thus softening the impact. Mr. Cmine ha••done this c1sewherl; and feels it is a visually pleasing finish. Whilst drainage is mentioned. the materials propoSt:o arc porous and should not change the natural soakage that takt;s place, more so if the beds of heather etc. arc introduced. The stOOl.:walls in the application arc similarly fix the purpose of creating a visually improved view from the highway and alsu displaying the stone from the quarry in wall fonn. Whilst Manx National Ilcritage correctly notes that the area has the traditional dry rdfldom stone walls Sl;l;nacross the Island. however at the quarry entrance, given its diffeTl:nt location, we ask that you consider approval to slone walls of the Cringle quarry stone set more regular and lidy, this will present a tidy entrance to the quarry. lbese walls will only be in place for the life of the quarry and removed when quarrying Cl;ases. 7 - 9 Drinlm.ater Strcer. Mention is also made of restoration upon cessation of the quarry, as there is a restoration plan in place, would this not cover this and other developments at the quarry and such could be a condition if approved and it was felt necessary. Yours sincerely. J.A. Callow for Partington. Nixon & Kinrade
