Environment Policy 35
ENV35 of the Isle of Man Strategic Plan 2007 requires that within Conservation Areas, only development which preserves or enhances the character or appearance of the Area will be permitted, protecting special features from inappropriate development. The officer tested the uPVC door against this, finding it failed as it introduced an inappropriate non-traditional feature. The windows passed as they matched existing non-traditional casements in a mixed street scene.
Planning Circular 1/98, The Alteration and Replacement of Windows
For buildings in Conservation Areas, windows readily visible from public thoroughfares must match the original method of opening, pattern, and frame sections if replacing originals; material is not specified as preferred. The officer noted originals were likely timber sliding sashes but existing were casements, so proposed uPVC casements matching existing were acceptable despite not being traditional, given street variety and policy allowance for material.
