• Colour photographs (minimum size 6”x4”) must be submitted with the form, clearly indicating the tree (s) for removal, illustrating the reason for removal (i.e. decay, proximity to structures etc.) and showing the tree(s) within the context of the surroundings. Failure to submit photographs may result in your application being returned. • Ensure that the form is signed by the owner(s) of the tree. If you are not the sole owner, a letter of au- thorisation from the (co-) owner must be submitted. Payment • A payment of £20 should accompany each application form. • No fee is payable for applications for permission to prune Registered trees. • Cheques should be made payable to Isle of Man Government. • Payment by credit/debit card, cash or cheque can be made in person at the Department’s offices, 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. • Card payments can also be made by telephoning the Department on 695701. • When paying by card you will be given a unique card authorisation number* which should be quoted on the front page of this application form (question 4). Please note that a 2% administration charge for payment by credit card will be incurred.

Have you considered planting a tree? • The Department recognises that trees provide a wide variety of benefits to society. • Where a tree is being removed and it is considered necessary in the interests of amenity, the approval of your application may be conditional on a tree (or multiple trees) being re-planted. • To aid in the swift processing of your application, if you have your own ideas about what you would like to plant and where you would like to plant it, please communicate this clearly in your application.

Felling Licences - Notes for Applicants Trees in the Isle of Man are protected under the Tree Preservation Act 1993. In order to remove trees with a diameter above 8cm measured at 1.5m from the ground, it is necessary to obtain a felling licence. Licences are also required to carry out pruning work on trees deemed to be Registered under the Act. Please note: • Inspecting officers do not offer tree safety advice to applicants or give advice on land owner- ship issues • DEFA is subject to the Freedom of Information Act 2015 and other obligations which often require us to communicate information we hold unless exemptions apply. This means that whilst we will respect the sensitivity of the information you provide, there may be legal re- quirements which oblige us to disclose information. How to complete the form: • Complete pages 1 and 2 of the form in full. Please ensure that all sections are completed with as much detail as possible. Failure to complete any section in sufficient detail may result in your applica- tion being returned. • List the tree(s) for which permission is sought and the location of the tree(s) within the site. • Please use the space provided to produce a sketch plan of the area if no other plan is being submitted with the application. • Clearly specify the works you want to carry out for each tree included in your application. For pruning works to registered trees, proposals to ‘cut back’ or ‘lop’ some branches will be considered too vague be- cause it fails to indicate the extent of the works. Common tree work operations include the following: • Crown reduction (reducing the overall size of a tree) - please specify the amount of reduction proposed (in metres) in terms of the intended height and spread of the tree after pruning. • Crown lifting (removing lower branches) - please identify the branches you wish to remove or specify a height above ground level to which you wish to ‘lift’ the crown. • Crown thinning (reducing the density of a trees crown) - please specify the amount of thinning proposed, expressed as a percentage (%) of leaf area. • Clearly state the reasons why you need to undertake the proposed work and provide sufficient evidence to support your case. • Please note that other than in exceptional circumstances the Department expects that all tree work should be carried out so as to accord with British Standard 3998:2010 (Tree Work - Recommendations). Tech- nical support on submitting your application should be provided by a suitably qualified and insured tree specialist. 3 Willow 1 Felling Mature willow approx. 7 M from back door The willow is too close to the building, reduction works were undertake approx 5 yaers ago, however the crown of the tree is now back over the roof of the house having grown 4-5 meters in the period since the last crown reduction. There are also underground services water/ drainage / electricity directly under the tree, and the root are likely to be affecting these.
