Officer assessed signage as compliant given mixed-use zoning, smaller scale than precedent, and illumination condition mitigating amenity impact opposite residences.
General Policy 6

Officer found signage high standard design, proportionate to office building, in keeping with mixed area including nearby illuminated signs, no safety issues.
General Policy 7
Restricts advertisements not relating to the site/building. Proposal relates directly to on-site office use, so permitted; no tension noted.
Time limit
The development hereby permitted shall commence before the expiration of four years from the date of this notice.
Approved plans
This approval relates to the erection of a illuminated signage as shown in drawing no. AT 1142.1 and AT 1142.2, both received on 16 March 2012.
Illumination hours
In the interest of general amenity to neighbouring residential properties, the signage may only be illuminated between 0800hrs and 2100hrs Monday to Friday inclusive.
recommended approval subject to signage illuminated until 9pm
recommends approval as no adverse traffic management, parking or road safety implications
The original application for illuminated signage was granted express consent by the Planning Authority subject to conditions restricting illumination hours. Local residents at Nos 7 and 9 Main Road appealed, arguing light pollution, visual incongruity with the village character, and precedent-setting risks. The applicant and authority defended the signage as compliant with General Policy 6 of the IOMSP, low luminance, and suitable for the mixed-use area. The inspector found no material adverse effects on character/appearance or residents' living conditions due to distance, low luminance, and existing commercial context. The appeals were dismissed on 30 August 2012, confirming approval with detailed conditions on hours, luminance, and signage removal.
Precedent Value
Low-luminance illuminated signage can be approved in mixed-use village streets despite residential opposition if GP6 criteria met and evidence shows no material amenity harm. Future applicants should prioritise technical lighting data and highlight commercial context over subjective visual objections.
