Re: Planning Application 15/01245/B - Erection of a two storey extension to provide an additional two apartments and construction of a wheelchair access ramp and gate to Braddan Road – Braddan Bridge House Peel Road Douglas IM4 4TN
Under the provisions of the Tourist Act 1975, this Department has a duty to maintain, encourage, develop, protect, promote and facilitate tourism in, to and from the Island to the best advantage of the Island (Tourist Act 1975 SS 1 and 2). The Department has an interest in this application by virtue of those provisions.
Joey Dunlop House currently offers three apartments which offer unique facilities to visitors to the Island. The level of accessibility is exceptional and in recognition of this the apartments have achieved 'M3ie' under the National Accessible Scheme. This rating indicates that the apartments are suitable for use by an independent wheelchair user, and meet additional requirements results in an 'exceptional' rating. Joey Dunlop House is currently the only premises on the Island with this rating.
The team at Joey Dunlop House have reported increased occupancy levels this year with the summer months being virtually 100% occupied. This demonstrates a clear demand for this type of accommodation which is not available elsewhere on the Island. The new apartments at Joey Dunlop will provide much needed additional accommodation which is fully accessible and can meet the demands of this growing market.
