Installation of Wood Burning Stove & Flue Liner System Contractor: Village Fireplaces and Stoves Ltd Peel Road Douglas I.O.M IM1 4LX
1. Overview
The proposed works involve the installation of a wood-burning stove within the existing fireplace opening of a listed building. Works will include the installation of a 904L flexible stainless steel flue liner system, a register plate, and minor internal alteration to the rear of the existing fireplace recess to allow safe installation of the flue system.
All works will be carried out with due care and in accordance with Building Regulations Approved Document J (Combustion Appliances and Fuel Storage Systems) and conservation best practices appropriate to listed buildings.
2. Protection of Existing Structure & Surroundings
Village Fireplaces and Stoves Ltd will:
- Protect all surrounding floors with flame-retardant dust sheets and hardboard where required.
- Protect nearby furniture and fixtures with clean protective coverings.
- Seal off the work area where possible to minimise dust migration.
- Ensure careful handling of all original materials to prevent unnecessary damage.
- Remove all waste materials from site and leave the area clean and tidy upon completion.
Special care will be taken to preserve original brickwork, stonework, and surrounding historic fabric.
3. Flue Liner Installation (904L System)
- The chimney will be swept prior to installation.
- A 904L grade flexible stainless steel flue liner will be installed from the chimney pot down to the appliance connection point.
- The liner will be insulated where required to meet regulations and improve performance.
- A suitable chimney cowl and top plate will be fitted to secure and weatherproof the system.
- All components will be HETAS-approved materials suitable for solid fuel use.
The use of 904L grade liner ensures increased resistance to corrosion, particularly suitable for wood-burning applications and long-term durability.
4. Fireplace Opening Alterations
- Minor removal of modern brick infill at the rear of the fireplace recess may be required to allow safe and correct alignment of the flue pipe connection and some brick where new hearth will be fitted.
- Only the minimum material necessary will be removed.
- No alterations will be made to visible historic masonry unless previously agreed (new Slate Hearth).
- Any disturbed areas will be made good sympathetically using appropriate materials.
5. Register Plate Installation
- A steel register plate will be fabricated and installed at the base of the chimney.
- The plate will be sealed to prevent debris fall and improve draw efficiency.
- Access points will be incorporated for future inspection and sweeping.
6. Stove Installation
- The stove will be installed within the existing opening in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
- Appropriate clearances to combustibles will be maintained.
- The appliance will be connected to the flue liner via vitreous enamel pipe.
- The installation will be smoke tested and commissioned upon completion.
7. Compliance & Certification
- Installation will comply with Approved Document J.
- Carbon monoxide alarm will be fitted in accordance with regulations.
- Appropriate commissioning certification will be provided upon completion.
8. Summary
The works are limited in scope, reversible where possible, and designed to preserve the character and integrity of the listed building while improving heating efficiency and safety.
