General Policy 2
Requires development to respect site surroundings in siting, scale, form, design and not adversely affect townscape character or locality amenity. Officer assessed the sign fails (b), (c) and (g) as it harms the uniform Victorian terrace character in proposed CA.
General Policy 6
Permits advertisements in towns/villages if high design/materials standard, relating well to building/site, in keeping with area, and no highway hazard. Sign fails (a) and (b) due to modern box design and illumination clashing with traditional properties.
General Policy 37
Permits advertisements in Conservation Areas only if preserving/enhancing the area, appropriate style, traditional materials (no glossy/reflective), excluding internally illuminated box signs. Proposal directly contravenes iii) and iv) with its box fascia and internal lighting.
Environment Policy 34
Prefers traditional materials in maintenance/alteration of pre-1920 buildings. Sign's modern materials (brushed aluminium, Perspex) do not use traditional finishes preferred for this Victorian property.
do not object to the application but have concerns over its appearance in this location. They recommend, should approval be granted, that the illumination of the signage should be switched off at 2200hrs
Port Erin Commissioners generally support the retrospective illuminated signage with a condition to limit illumination after 10pm; Highways Division do not oppose; a neighbouring resident objects strongly to the associated change of use but mentions the sign.
Key concern: change of use to restaurant out of keeping in residential area

ObjectionThe change of use to a Chinese Restaurant in a predominantly residential area is totally out of keeping with the area.; The large illuminated sign will cast light into my bedroom and sitting room.; The loss of privacy to my living areas with the public coming and going for the meals all year round will be great having an impact on my security and comfort.
