In terms of the water pollution perspective providing the slurry storage is >10m from the watercourse and an impermeable layer is used to line the pit.
Both of these points have been addressed by the applicants.
Thanks, Danielle

Guidance can be found on this page https://www.gov.uk/guidance/storing-silage-slurry-and-agricultural- fuel-oil#general-rules
There is specific legislation covering this sort of pit in England, see http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2010/639/contents/made
I have found the following http://democracy.southlakeland.gov.uk/documents/s19026/SL.2017.0495%20- %20Hincaster%20Bradley%20Farm%20Slurry%20Lagoon.pdf that appears to be about a similar application that was considered by South Lakeland District Council.
I note that in point 21 the EHO asked for the following condition to be attached to the application:
“A full Odour Management Plan is required in order to demonstrate that odour emissions will be adequately controlled to prevent a significant loss of amenity to neighbouring sensitive land users. Use of the proposed site shall not commence until the Odour Management Plan has been agreed in writing with the Local Planning Authority. Recommended content for an Odour Management Plan can be found in The Institute of Air Quality Management document “Guidance on the assessment of odour for planning”.”
I have copied in Danielle in case she would like to comment from a water pollution perspective.
Kind regards
Kristian

Hi Sarah
Earth walled or a proper job?
Earth walled would be acceptable but wouldn’t qualify for grant aid.
Would definitely be acceptable practice if constructed to the appropriate standards although we can only control building to these standards as a requirement if an application is being made to the AFGS scheme. All structures should comply with BS5502 part 50 ‘Code of practice for design and construction of storage tanks and reception pits for livestock slurry’
It should only be smelly when it is being emptied
Do you have any further details you are prepared to share with me?

Dear both,
I have a current application for the creation of a slurry lagoon. I’m not sure I have ever had one of these proposed before and wondered if it was acceptable agricultural practice and if so, if there are any other environmental controls over such things. Is there likely to be any potential smell or other environmental nuisance I should be aware of and/or anything I should be asking the applicant for in the development to make it environmentally acceptable?
The Millennium Way public footpath runs through the farm but not adjacent to the site of the proposed lagoon.
Any help you can provide would be welcome.
Sarah
