The comment stated;
The lattice iron windows are indeed original to the church and have been part of the street scene of Castletown since the 1830s. The church is in the Castletown Conservation Area and is prominent in that area.
The retention of the latticework should not be dismissed out of hand as in the report. THERE ARE OTHER WAYS OF TACKLING THE PROBLEM.
We would refer the Planning Committee to Welch House, Church Road, Onchan which has the same type of windows.
When they were renovated a blow lamp was used to burn out glass, putty and paint. The windows were not sandblasted but sanded, which did not distort the metal work. The ironwork was then primed and painted and fitted into a new timber frame behind a single sheet of glass. Provision can be made to accommodate vertical joints in the glass.
This method should be investigated rather than just going ahead and destroying part of our architectural heritage. The Year of Architecture should have resulted in the heightening of awareness in the built environment. This should not just be a 'rubber stamp' affair.
