Whilst it is accepted that the Onchan Local Plan makes no provision for the redevelopment of Slegaby Farmhouse, it is the Applicant's contention that there are several arguments in favour of retaining a residential presence on the site.

It is important to remember that Slegaby started life as a Viking farmstead (the name is Viking in origin) and has been continuously inhabited until fairly recent times.

The present building was originally a simple, double-fronted farmhouse, which was extended at an indeterminate date to create two smaller houses. The building is at right angles to the Large Barn, and together with Beggars House, forms a yard facing roughly south east.

The proposal originally submitted for approval consisted of a substantial double fronted house with side wings, which included a garage. It was sited in the same orientation as the existing building in order to retain the sense of enclosure of the original building group. Taking into account the Planning Committee's comment that 'the new house is much grander in character and appearance that the existing building', the proposals have been redesigned to create a much more modest, doublefronted dwelling, similar in size and appearance of the replacement proposed for Glenside Cottage.

In light of the above, we would request that the Planning Committee reverse its original decision, and approve the modified proposals.
