MR U HULTGREN
JURBY

18.9.2006

Stocking and viability of 105 acres in Jurby with Manx Loaghtan.

Dear Mr Hultgren

As you are aware Manx Loaghtan is the only indigenous farm animal left on the Isle of Man and is also the only growth area in meat production on the island. With the arrival of the E U certification EC No: UK/00340/05.2004 known as the P D O, this unique certification will help underwrite the future and value of this animal for its meat and wool to the Manx economy and as a symbol of quality.

The other big plus factor is your enthusiasm for the breeding and rearing of Manx Loaghtan. If not encouraged, we will have no farming or Manx Loaghtans left on the island.

With an area of 105 acres and a barn you are ideally placed to operate a viable production unit. Your flock size would be in the region of 500 breeding ewes which would give you a projected income based on 2006 statistics, as follows

1. Sales of meat 4000 kilos @ £2.80 = £11200
2. Sales of breeding stock 225 @ £40 = £9000 (25 ewes retained as replacements)
3. Government support 500 ewes @ £14.58 = £7290

This would provide an income of £27490 from which you would need to deduct winter feed costs of say £8 per ewe and follower. This could vary depending on the sourcing of you fodder i.e home grown or bought in. The cost would be in the region of £4000 leaving a net income of £23490.

There would also be a income from the wool clip. This would be in the region of £1000 if you did your own shearing.

As you are aware farming is labour intensive and is very important that any one working a farm lives on the premises. A human presence is required all the time to oversee the welfare of the animals no matter the season or part of the animals life. Having to commute to a holding is a waste of a number of precious commodities such as time, fuel and energy.

Yours sincerely
