Dear Ms Callow

**DEPT OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND THE ENVIRONMENT**

PA 03/00714: Alterations and refurbishment of control tower annex, Jurby Terminal Building, Jurby Industrial Estate, Jurby

The control tower annex is part of the World War Two buildings complex at Jurby Airfield, recognised to be historically important in the Manx Heritage Foundation commissioned report 'Airfield Archaeology; RAF Jurby and Associated Sites' by Paul Francis. A copy of this report is lodged with the DLGE Conservation Officer.

It is important that the complex of buildings at Jurby can find continuing and future uses. Where restoration or renewal of part of a building takes place, this should be sympathetic to the history of the original structures and the materials used in them. The planning application refers to the replacement of the annex roof and the re-installation of windows. We would recommend that a roof appearance which is more sympathetic to the original would be more appropriate than that proposed and that the re-installed windows should take their design from the original windows in this building.

Since the proposed alterations and refurbishment will substantially alter what may be the original fabric of the building, it is essential that detailed recording of its features and materials is carried out before work commences to maintain the continuity of the archive.

Should the Committee be minded to approve the application, Manx National Heritage would be able to advise and assist in the recording of the building.

Yours sincerely,

A C C Johnson
Curator Field Archaeology
