# Amended Extension Design Statement

## Design statement for amended single storey extension proposals at Whitestrand New Cottage, Lhergydhoo, Peel - PA 10/00546/B

Following a meeting with the Planning Officer, Mr S. Stanley, held at Murray House on Monday 12th July 2010 the proposed extension has been amended as per our discussions.

The main entrance extension has be re-designed to incorporate a pitched roof with a feature dormer window as the focal point, similar to the proposals under planning approval PA99/0626. The roof is to be finished with reconstituted roofing slates to match the existing building.

The main pitched roof of the proposed extension has been amended so the ridgeline is lower than that of the ridge on the building the extension connects to. This helps maintain a degree of separation between the existing building and the new extension, which enables the buildings history/development to be clearly and easily seen.

As Peel sandstone is no longer being mined on the island and there are no reserve stocks available, consideration was given to finishing the new extension with sandstone mined in the UK. However the exact match could not be guaranteed and the cost of importing the quantities involved would render the project unfeasible. This being the case we are proposing to finish the external walls of the new extension with rough cast render to receive a masonry paint finish. Rough cast render is traditional finish which is commonly seen around the island and again will help maintain the separation between the existing and new buildings.

As the owners of the building have limited mobility, the provision of an extra bedroom at first floor level, as approved under PA99/0626, is no longer required. We have taken the opportunity to slightly increase the size of the ground floor extension, approximately 10 m 2 , however this is still significantly less than the floor area of the extension previously approved.
